I’m old enough to remember when Grenade sold “Carb Killa” bars nearly a decade ago, and maybe my memory is skewed at this point, but I remember them being unbelievable.
From what I recall, they were everything Barebells protein bars are now: soft and chewy, and with great caramel and crunchy inclusions throughout.
Grenade discontinued the bars in the US years ago and instead focused on their other markets, growing in popularity worldwide. Since then, the protein bar scene has exploded here in the US, and it’s safe to say that Barebells swooped in and stole the top spot (not just mine, but general popularity).
Now, here we are in 2026, and Grenade is finally making their comeback.
Once Grenade pulled their bars off shelves in this country, I was able to get my hands on their Oreo bar in Canada, and it was unbelievably good. So naturally, when you combine that with my fond memories of the Carb Killa bars, my expectations were sky high.
From a macro standpoint, all of the bars hover in the 210-250 calorie range depending on flavor, and they all contain 20 grams of protein.
I remember the Carb Killa bars containing quite a bit of sugar alcohols, and that is still the case; these bars contain 17 grams of sugar alcohols, which may not be kind to everyone’s gut. It looks like the main source is maltitol, which doesn’t personally bother my stomach, but it’s something to keep in mind.
Unlike most protein bars on the market, these contain virtually no fiber, so they’re not necessarily targeting current health trends. Instead, Grenade is focusing on taste, protein, and having extremely low net carbs.
Let’s see if the taste lives up to the lofty expectations I have unreasonably set.
Grenade Cookie Dough Protein Bar
Starting off with cookie dough, I was a little disappointed to find that the bar is simply a nougat center with caramel. Luckily, the chunks you see on the top of the bar are chocolate chips, so you do end up getting an authentic chocolate chip cookie dough experience.
Overall, you can absolutely tell that this is a cookie dough flavor, but it has the typical protein bar chew to it that we’ve all come to expect. Many bars have learned how to correct that texture by now, but it seems like they took the formula they had from 10 years ago and simply brought it back.
For a protein bar, it provides a pretty solid cookie dough experience, but the chewy nature of the bar does knock it down a peg or two.
In other words: this bar is good, but it’s far from great.
Greande Salted Caramel Protein Bar
This is one of the most confusing protein bars I have ever eaten, because what do you mean this bar that looks like triple chocolate is actually salted caramel?
I checked the label 10 different times, and I can assure you that this is indeed salted caramel.
In terms of flavor, you can definitely taste the caramel, but the caramel layer itself leaves a lot to be desired. The salt doesn’t come through much, but that seems to be par for the course with protein bars.
Honestly, this bar tastes a ton like Fulfil, and has a similar chewy texture as well.
With any caramel protein bar, the caramel layer itself makes or breaks the experience. Without a good caramel pull, which you don’t really get here, it’s just caramel flavor, which is far less exciting.
Grenade Oreo Protein Bar
Once you crack this bar open, you know it’s going to be a winner. You can’t deliver on the perfect Oreo interior and miss on the Oreo experience.
This bar still has that thick protein bar chewiness to it, but the Oreo layers inside the bar are nothing short of spectacular (for a protein bar, that is). Don’t expect this to taste like chocolate-covered Oreos, but they did everything they needed to nail the Oreo experience.
The cream layers eats like Oreo cream and gives the proper sweetness, but you absolutely taste the sugar alcohol in it. It reminds me of when I used to make protein “icing” using sugar substitute and milk. That sounds gross, I know, but it actually works well in this bar against the dark Oreo interior.
I can’t deny that this one tastes artificial, but it also tastes like Oreos, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Grenade White Oreo Protein Bar
The white chocolate Oreo bar is the one I was most excited about, and it ended up being about 10x better than any of Grenade’s other bars. If you’re only going to try one bar, let it be this one.
This version works so much better than the chocolate-coated Oreo bar because the coating tastes like real white chocolate. While it most certainly contains sugar alcohols, the white chocolate coating tastes like authentic white chocolate.
And when you pair that with Oreos, it simply works.
The white chocolate helps mask the artificial taste of the cream, so this one eats way more like a candy bar overall. It’s still a bit chewier than I would prefer, but this is easily Grenade’s best flavor.
Grenade Protein Bars: Honest Thoughts
I’m a decade older than I was the last time I had Grenade bars, and a lot has changed since then. The protein bar market has shifted pretty dramatically, and my own needs (and taste buds) have changed since then, too.
Are Grenade bars as good as they used to be? Maybe. But that’s not enough to put them at the top of the market anymore.
From a nutrition standpoint, they’re eventually going to have to change their formula. Customers simply don’t want bars loaded up with sugar alcohols anymore. That worked 10 years ago to satisfy the keto market, but customers now want cleaner ingredients, protein, and fiber.
I hate to continuously compare these to Barebells, but with 4 grams of fiber and 6(ish) grams of sugar alcohol, those appeal to a much wider audience.
Nutrition aside, the flavors of these are decent. If they could improve the texture to be a bit softer and less chewy, the flavors themselves would be more forgiving. As it currently stands, the cookie dough and salted caramel bars would not be anything I’d come running back to, but the Oreo bars are worth checking out.
Specifically, the white chocolate Oreo protein bar. In terms of overall experience, even though it’s a bit too chewy, it’s towards the top of my list for all-time favorite protein bars.
Seriously, if you like Oreos, and I know you do, then give that bar a shot. The others… you don’t need to go out of your way.
