When I saw that PrimeBites released mini muffins, I was equal parts excited and skeptical.
On one hand, who doesn’t love mini muffins? I grew up with mini muffins as part of my daily school lunch rotation, so if these could tap into any part of that, the nostalgia alone would be worth it.
On the other hand, I had a pretty mixed experience with PrimeBites protein brownies, so there’s a chance that these are just the brownies shaped like little muffins.
The PrimeBites brownies were actually one of the few protein brownies that I actually enjoyed. In fact, I enjoyed the brownie a lot.
But when I tried the blondies, I found the artificial taste to be extremely overpowering. I hope I had an outlier experience, but my fear is that these mini muffins would follow the same pattern.
Nutritionally, these mini muffins are very similar to the brownies, leading me to think that they are definitely just the brownies repurposed.
The brownies did contain slightly more sugar alcohol in place of the sugar, so let’s hope these got rid of that strong artificial flavor I experienced the first time around.
PrimeBites Mini Chocolate Fudge Muffins
I’m not sure what I was expecting, but getting only 3 mini muffins per bag was slightly disappointing.
And opening the package confirmed my fear: these are definitely just the brownies shaped like tiny muffins.
That being said, they’re actually pretty darn tasty.
They lack that fluffiness that would make them an actual muffin, so I would absolutely call these brownie bites.
I’m very thankful that PrimeBites decided to lower the sugar alcohol content in these, because I don’t think they taste fake at all.
The chocolate flavor does feel a bit dulled down, and I wish there was a deeper chocolate flavor to these to really capture the chocolate fudge flavor name. Overall, it leans more towards the sweet side, kind of like a chocolate cupcake instead of a chocolate muffin.
The texture is very soft, but in a brownie way rather than a muffin way. If they were framed as brownie bites, these would be a home run. But as muffins, they’re more of a ground rule double.
PrimeBites Mini Blueberry Muffins
I love blueberry muffins, but again, these are not muffins.
The artificial sugar taste does come through a bit with this flavor. Chocolate makes it easy to mask, but there is nothing for the sugar alcohol to hide behind in this one.
Considering the full-size blueberry cobbler protein blondies they sell have the same purplish icing on top, I have to imagine these are essentially the same product. Now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, because it’s a solid product, but it’s simply not a muffin.
The sugar alcohol taste is a bit too strong in this one, so I would stick with the chocolate fudge flavor, personally.
PrimeBites Mini Protein Muffins: Overall Thoughts
I like this product, but they are not muffins. If they taste good, does that really matter?
Honestly, it kind of does.
If you’re buying these, it’s either because you like muffins or you want to eat muffins… or both. While these “mini muffins” are soft and overall enjoyable, they’re brownie bites.
If you buy Little Bites and compare the muffins and the brownie bites side by side, you’ll notice a distinct textural difference. And if you add these PrimeBites alongside them, you’ll see that they much more closely resemble the brownie bites.
If you buy these expecting mini brownies, you’ll enjoy them more. The blueberry flavor is a pass from me either way because of the sugar alcohol flavor, but the chocolate is a winner in my book.
