Detour protein bars have been around for quite some time now, but these M&M bars are fairly new to the market.
Seeing as they contain ACTUAL M&M’s, I was really excited to get my hands on these.
These bars are very large compared to others out there, which is great to see. Yes, they are very thin, but it’s always disappointing when you have 2 bites of a protein bar and it’s basically gone after that. With these, that is not the case.
Depending on the flavor, these bars have 210-250 calories. With 250 calories and 14g of protein, it’s not super impressive in the protein department, but it’s still high enough for me to consider it a decent protein snack.
The texture
The Detour Lean Muscle bars are a cross between your standard chewy protein bar and an oatmeal bar.
Luckily, they are very thin, so the dense & chewy nature is not completely off-putting. Still, I’d prefer for these to be much softer.
If you’ve ever had a Power Bar (they used to be my go-to bar many moons ago) these have a very similar texture.
The peanut butter flavor is much softer than the regular M&M bar, so if I had to choose between the two, I would definitely go with that one. Since it uses actual peanut butter, the bar ends up softer, but that also comes with extra calories & twice as much fat as the original flavor.
You get plenty of oats in each bite, so if you love oatmeal bars, I can definitely see that being a point in their favor for you.
All in all, the texture isn’t horrible, but I’d prefer these to be much softer than they are.
The flavor
Seeing as these are loaded up with actual M&M’s, the hope would be that they actually taste like… M&M’s.
Sadly, the M&M flavor is very minimal in these bars. Since the M&M’s are just sitting on top of the bar, they basically act as chocolate chips.
You may be thinking: “what else would you expect?”
Honestly, I’m not entirely sure. But, the fact that these are advertised so heavily as M&M bars, I was hoping that the flavor would be much more prominent. If I were to close my eyes and eat these protein bars, I would have no idea they contained M&M’s vs regular chocolate chips.
M&M’s aside, these bars are decent. The original flavor reminds me very much of a vanilla Power Bar, which may or may not be appealing to you.
The peanut butter bar has a distinct peanut butter flavor, and it reminds me a little bit of G2G protein bars (which I happen to love), just denser and chewier.
The fact that the M&M’s don’t add much flavor here is very disappointing to me because, without those, these are pretty average-tasting protein bars.
