Bobo's protein bars

Bobo’s Oat Bars are a delicious snack- I was introduced to them as a healthy snack for my toddler, and I quickly fell in love. They are not protein bars, but simply minimal ingredient oat bars.

So, when I saw that Bobo’s released protein bars, I needed to give them a try.

These bars are plant-based and currently offered in two flavors: Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip and Double Chocolate Almond Butter. Considering the protein bars have peanut butter and almond butter bases, I was hopeful that these would compare to Perfect Bars.

Bobo's Macros

The fact that these contain 100 fewer calories than Perfect Bar is simply icing on the cake. 240 Calories and 15 grams of protein may not seem overly impressive, but it’s pretty standard for plant-based protein bars.

And if they taste half as good as the oat bars, it’ll be a huge win.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bobo’s Protein Bar

Bobo's peanut butter protein bar

The first thing I noticed about the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip bar was its intensely earthy taste.

The pea protein flavor is very strong, overshadowing the peanut butter. The main ingredient here is peanut butter, so I was expecting that to be the prominent flavor, but that is not the case.

The bar has a soft texture with crispy bits mixed in, which is a nice touch. However, the dominant pea protein flavor and the bitter aftertaste it causes completely offsets the pleasant texture.

It’s essentially like eating a bar made of peanut butter-flavored pea protein, not something I’m eager to have in a protein bar.

Double Chocolate Almond Butter Review

Bobo's double chocolate

The Double Chocolate Almond Butter bar is a bit better, although it does look quite dry by comparison.

The chocolate helps mask the pea protein flavor more effectively, with a dark chocolate taste that’s more bitter than sweet.

This bitterness helps hide the pea protein flavor in this bar, but it’s still noticeable.

The bar is definitely drier compared to the peanut butter variant, but it isn’t nearly as dry as it probably looks.

Still, the lack of moisture is enough to take away from the overall experience. Considering this is nut butter-based, you’d expect there to be more moisture throughout.

Despite the improvement over the peanut butter flavor, it still leaves a bitter aftertaste from the pea protein flavor, which I just do not enjoy.

Final Verdict

Bobo's protein bars

Both bars unfortunately left an aftertaste that was so off-putting, I found it hard to finish them. This is rare for me, as I generally enjoy a wide range of protein bars I can tolerate even sub-par flavors.

I read one review on Amazon that stated these are an “acquired taste like all protein bars” but I don’t believe that’s a necessity for protein bars. I’ve had plenty of protein bars that are delicious from the very first bite, even if they are plant-based.

These Bobo’s protein bars might appeal to those who don’t mind a strong pea protein taste, but for me, they were too much like eating pea protein powder in bar form.

I love Bobo’s oat bars, but I have to be honest – their protein bars didn’t win me over. If you’re okay with a prominent pea protein flavor, you might find these bars more to your liking.

For me, however, I’ll have to pass on these and stick to their oat bars instead.

Summary
I love Bobo's Oat Bars, but these protein bars are a huge disappointment for me. They taste like flavored pea protein in the form of a protein bar- something that I am certainly not into.
