G2G Protein Bars

About five years ago, I stumbled upon G2G Protein Bars, and it was love at first bite.

At the time they had fewer flavors, but I loved the original bar, the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip bar. From what I remember, it tasted like a bar of peanut butter with chocolate chips in it. I mean, what’s not to love?

Over the past few years, I have seen G2G pop up quite a few times on social media, so I finally snagged a variety pack to try all 8 of their current flavors.

If the formula hasn’t changed since I first tried these, I know they will be a winner.

G2G Bars vs Perfect Bar

If you’re unfamiliar with G2G bars, they were one of the first refrigerated protein bars out there. When they launched, Perfect Bar existed, but not much else.

Since then, the world has opened its arms to many more refrigerated bars, but it was very new and exciting at the time. Refrigerated protein bars allow for a completely different flavor profile than the typical chocolate-coated candy-bar-like bars you see on shelves.

G2G Bar Nutrition

Nutritionally, G2G is similar to Perfect Bar since they are both peanut butter-based, but you’ll notice some major differences.

For starters, G2G bars are much larger, which is already a win in my book. Even with the larger size, G2G bars have fewer calories (300 vs 340), less fat (14g vs 19g), and more protein (18g vs 17g). And while G2G bars are relatively high in sugar, the 15 grams are lower than the perfect bar as well.

So, G2G wins in terms of flavor variety, size, and macros, but what about taste? Let’s find out.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip

G2G Peanut butter chocolate chip

This was the bar that introduced me to G2G, and it’s still a favorite.

It has a firm yet soft texture, and the flavor is reminiscent of honey-roasted peanut butter. While there aren’t too many chocolate chips in the bar, they contribute enough flavor to elevate the whole experience.

G2G interior

This bar’s taste is similar to the Perfect Bar but without the greasiness I found in the latter.

Considering the large size, decent macros, and great taste, I’ll definitely be back to buy this one again.

Peanut Butter Coconut Chocolate

G2G peanut butter coconut chip

This bar is similar to the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip but adds coconut flakes to it.

It seemed even softer than the previous bar, but that is probably just because it sat out a bit longer. For those who like coconut, this bar will likely be a hit.

I’m not a big fan of coconut flakes myself, so I found the addition slightly off-putting. The contrast between the soft peanut butter and the chewy coconut flakes wasn’t for me, but the flavor itself was awesome.

I’ll stick to the regular peanut butter chocolate chip, but coconut fans will enjoy this one.

Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate

G2G Banana chocolate chip

Generally, I’m not a huge fan of banana-flavored bars (like Barebells’ banana soft bar, which I didn’t enjoy), but G2G nailed this one.

The bar genuinely tastes like peanut butter and banana, a severely underrated combination. If you’ve never tried a peanut butter and banana sandwich, you need to stop reading this and go make yourself one ASAP.

The banana flavor here is real and not overpowering, complemented well by the chocolate chips. Though I think the bar would be fine without the chocolate chips, they don’t detract from the overall experience.

If you’re like me and don’t like the flavor of banana-flavored candies, but enjoy actual bananas, you’ll enjoy these.

Peanut Butter and Jelly

G2G pb and jelly

This bar smells exactly like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, so I was really excited to dive in.

However, the jelly flavor is way too subtle. I was hoping for noticeable pockets of jelly, but they were nowhere to be found.

You can taste the jelly a bit, but it’s not prominent, taking a back seat to the peanut butter. The bar isn’t bad, but it was definitely a letdown for a PB&J flavor.

Almond Chocolate Chip

G2G Almond Oatmeal

I reviewed the peanut butter-based bars first because I know I enjoy peanut butter WAY more than almond butter, so take the almond butter bar reviews with a tiny grain of salt. I’ll be objective, but peanut butter is far more delicious.

This bar is essentially almond butter formed into a bar with chocolate chips added. Almond butter being drier than peanut butter means this bar is firmer and less sweet, so I enjoyed it much less than the peanut butter version.

The almond flavor is prominent, which might please almond butter fans (or those with allergies), but it just doesn’t do it for me.

Almond Oatmeal Cookie

G2G Almond Chocolate Chip

Like the Almond Chocolate Chip, the almond flavor dominates in this bar.

The honey flavor seems stronger here, creating a mix of honey and almond butter as if you’re eating a jar of honey-roasted almond butter.

You can taste the oats, adding a bit of texture, but it doesn’t quite capture the essence of an oatmeal cookie. In my opinion, GoMacro did a better job with their oatmeal cookie bar.

Almond Mocha

Now we’re talking.

As a coffee lover, I really enjoyed this one. There is a very strong coffee scent AND flavor here, which I loved.

The strong coffee flavor does a good job of masking the earthy almond taste more than the other bars, which is important to me.

This bar tastes like high-quality coffee-flavored almond butter, more bitter than sweet, which is perfect for someone who enjoys black coffee (such as myself).

Almond Coconut

G2G Almond coconut bar

Considering I’m not a huge fan of almond or coconut flakes, this bar wasn’t my favorite.

To be fair, it does taste like what it’s supposed to be: almond and coconut. If that’s a combination you enjoy, you might want to try this one.

I found the bar a bit dry, and the flavor combination wasn’t to my liking.

G2G Bar: Overall Thoughts

G2G Bar Flavors

G2G bars are a step up from Perfect Bars. They have a similar flavor profile and ingredients, but G2G bars are larger, offer more variety, and have better nutrition.

They’re a bit greasy, which is expected from nut butter-based bars, but not over the top where I find it to be a problem.

The almond butter versions are firmer, with more texture from the almond pieces, and might appeal to those with peanut allergies. If you don’t have allergies, the peanut butter bars are a much better choice.

If you’re a peanut butter enthusiast like me, you’ll love these bars.

My personal flavor ranking, from best to worst, is:

  1. Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip
  2. Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate
  3. Almond Mocha, Peanut Butter Coconut
  4. Peanut Butter and Jelly
  5. Peanut Butter Coconut Chocolate
  6. Almond Chocolate Chip
  7. Almond Oatmeal Cookie
  8. Almond Coconut

If you get a chance, I highly recommend giving these a shot.
