MRE muffin flavors

The MRE Protein Brookie is one of my favorite protein brownies on the market, so when I came across these MRE Protein Muffins, I was really excited.

Redcon1 did a really solid job with the brookie, and in terms of texture, it is the closest thing to a real brownie that I have tried when it comes to high-protein snacks.

Protein muffins tend to be really dry, but considering the awesome texture of the brookie, I was excited and hopeful for a moist brownie.

The macros of these muffins are extremely similar to the brownies, with 230 calories and 15 grams of protein each. These are supposed to be more appealing since they do not contain whey protein (they’re not vegan, but they contain collagen and beef protein instead of whey) but I have zero issues with whey, so that doesn’t mean a whole lot to me.

I tried both Wild Blueberry and Double Chocolate, so let’s get into it.

Wild Blueberry MRE Protein Muffin

Blueberry MRE protein muffin

Blueberry muffins are probably my favorite type of muffin, so it only made sense to start here.

Unwrapping the protein muffin, the texture seems pretty impressive. While a lot of the muffin stuck to the liner, it definitely resembles a real muffin without seeming too dry.

Interior of MRE muffin

I was worried by the lack of blueberries, but luckily I found some once I bit into the protein muffin.

Unfortunately, the flavor of this muffin is just… bad.

In a blind taste test, I’m not sure I would even know that this was a blueberry muffin. Yes, there are a couple of blueberries inside, but the overall flavor is no different from their blondie.

In fact, this very much just tastes like the blondie repackaged as a muffin, and the similar macros make me think this is likely the case.

That bitter aftertaste that comes through in the MRE blondie is very much present in these muffins, and it was enough to make me not finish this muffin.

Double Chocolate MRE Protein Muffin

The double chocolate muffin is a slight improvement over the blueberry flavor, but it falls short in its own right.

Luckily, thanks to the chocolate, the bitter aftertaste is completely masked in this one. So, on flavor alone, this one already wins.

That being said, this muffin was very dry compared to the blueberry variety. I was really hopeful for a moist muffin considering how soft & moist the protein brookie was, but this tastes like stale cake more than a muffin.

The chocolate flavor is prominent enough in this that it won’t completely disappoint chocolate fans, although I’m not quite sure I would consider this “double chocolate.” While dry, I can see it being enough for someone who needs a chocolatey snack.

MRE Protein Brownies: Final Thoughts

MRE protein muffins

The MRE Protein Brookie was the tale of two flavors: one of them blew me away, and the other was an extreme disappointment.

Unfortunately, both of these muffins fall into the latter category.

The blueberry muffin lacks blueberry flavor and contains a very strong bitter aftertaste that makes it unpleasant.

The double chocolate flavor is decent, but the muffin itself is very dry, which takes away from the overall enjoyment.

I see a lot of potential in this protein muffins, but the current formulation is a pass for me.

Summary
After enjoying the MRE protein brownies, I had high hopes for these protein muffins, but sadly they fall very short. While you can't expect a protein muffin to be as good as the real thing, neither flavor is worth the purchase in my opinion.
